Impressions, 2018

In theorising the contemporary perception of “reality” as falsities of social media obscure it, I have taken a screenshot of my Instagram “impressions,” an algorithmic software that displays how many interactions have occurred with an individual's photographs and analyzed the image through data bending techniques. I “worked with the machine” by manipulating the code at random, and blowing up the pixels to create a new, organic textured digital landscape. In an attempt to understand my online identity, the mere “impression” of these moments that I had initially captured to savour and share a moment in time hold so much more information; information and bit forms that is used to perpetuate consumer culture that we, as a society have become enmeshed with.

Are we able to maintain our authentic identity as we craft one online? In order to investigate this question, I printed the rendered pixels on transparent paper and mounted them on mirrors, providing an opportunity for the viewer to see themselves within the digital landscape
